Scientific and Laboratory
Our team of researchers, designers and engineers are experienced at collaborating with scientists and client engineering teams to create and develop scientific instruments and laboratory products that are highly efficient and effective in their operation. Our track record shows that we do this whilst meeting the needs of the specialist user and reflecting the requirements of our client’s professional brands operating in this area.
Our work often supports the creation and development of solutions that improve and enhance scientific and laboratory processes, whether that be in the preparation and handling of samples, reagents and consumables, the precision sequencing of measurement steps, the presentation of data analysis results to inform decision making, or otherwise.
We have a long-established track record in the design and development of sophisticated laboratory instruments
Multidisciplinary expertise
With a large and integrated multidisciplinary development team, comprising mechanical engineers, electronics engineers, software engineers, industrial designers, human factors experts and UX/UI specialists, we offer a proven product development capability. We have worked on the design and development of a wide range of instruments and equipment, contributing to the success of our clients in numerous different ways. We have helped clients with complete developments, as well as focused sprints or stages to overcome key technical and manufacturing challenges. We have engineered core platform technologies and created modular expansion systems. We have designed engaging and ‘timeless’ visual product identities and helped to define, analyse, optimise and prove complex user interfaces.
Advancing science with robust engineering
A deep understanding of the core scientific principles and measurement sensitivities is always key to developing a successful scientific instrument.
It is often the case that not all factors that will be important in the practical application of a technology will be known from the outset, particularly where the core concept has been demonstrated only in a laboratory experiment.
Translating scientific concepts into robust engineering solutions requires a rigorous, systematic approach. Our evidence-based development process builds understanding through an iterative combination of first principles calculations, computer simulation, risk analysis, design, rig and prototype construction, pilot manufacture and functional testing. This approach helps to challenge assumptions and builds confidence in the developing designs by identifying the key parameters that underpin product performance within the development lifecycle. Once identified, we put in place strategies to ensure that these parameters are appropriately controlled and monitored within the commercial design.
Our engineering expertise and experience includes systems that deal with sample materials of many different types, and that utilise single or multiple detection and measurement technologies, typically aiming to provide meaningful and appropriately accurate results often very quickly.
Tackling the development of complex systems
To deliver safe, effective and reliable scientific and laboratory products requires a detailed understanding of the overall system architecture as well as the product performance and interface requirements.
When developing complex technical systems, we typically build on the technical skills, rigour and procedural foundations that we put in place to develop safety critical medical devices and associated systems. Whether it be requirements capture, usability, mechanical engineering, electronics engineering, software development or risk management, we apply our development systems engineering skills and tools intelligently, where they add value and help us and our clients to progress efficiently.
Most scientific instruments are complex systems in their own right, but they often need to work as part of a broader laboratory network
Communicating brand values
As ambassadors for your brand, the external design and user interaction points of your scientific instruments and laboratory products should confidently communicate your values and reinforce the perception of quality for your products.
Establishing a strong visual identity that is applied consistently across a product range is fundamental. Our highly experienced industrial design team brings vast experience and expertise in Visual Brand Language (VBL), developed from working over many years with some of the world’s biggest brand owners.
We help companies to create, understand and manage visual identities for their products. Creating clear VBL guidelines that capture and communicate the key brand values, we show how these can be translated into tangible physical elements such as form, detail, material and colour. Our industrial design work is always sensitive to the brand and the needs of users, as well as the constraints of efficient manufacture.
Our experienced teams can support you in rolling out your visual brand across your products on a national or international basis, with confidence.
