Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation

Our portfolio of work in orthopaedic and rehabilitation includes design and development of portable bath-lifts and mobility scooters for the elderly and infirm, as well as custom configurable electronic control systems for prosthetic hands, monitoring units for lower limbs and the development of advanced mechanical lower limbs and feet using composite materials.

Our practical analytical approach, combined with design sensitivity and experienced use of human factors has allowed us to provide efficient and effective solutions to demanding challenges in this area.

With a large multidisciplinary development team that includes specialist researchers, ergonomists, industrial designers, mechanical engineers, electronics engineers and software developers, along with in-house prototyping and test lab facilities, we offer a proven product development capability for either discrete stages of work, or a full turnkey service.

Understanding people and their individual needs

Many orthopaedic and rehabilitation devices are adjusted or adapted to suit the individual patient in order to help optimise what can be achieved, and to do so in a way that cares for long-term health and wellbeing.

Our holistic approach to product design means we aim to consider the needs of the whole person and the needs of the healthcare professionals that support them. We have specialists in ergonomics, human factors and design research who are highly skilled in understanding the general requirements and the specific needs of patient populations, individuals and their carers.

Maximising performance potential

The application of supplemental robotics including, microprocessor controller technologies, advanced materials and connected intelligent systems, is providing greater opportunities to improve the performance of orthopaedic and rehabilitation devices in ways that can go beyond achieving basic well-being and mobility. It is now possible for these advances to help individuals achieve performance enhancements not thought possible even a decade ago.

Our depth of understanding of current and new technologies, across all of our experienced multidisciplinary skills is of significant support to the work we do for our clients in orthopaedics and rehabilitation.

Integrated technologies that empower rehabilition

Making a good recovery from a serious injury, major surgery or a significant cardiovascular disease event usually requires a tailored and individualised programme of rehabilitation with specialists guiding and monitoring progress. The integration of miniaturised electronics and connectivity in devices that interface with digital networks is proving to be very effective in deploying more effective treatments even remotely through virtual reality and telerehabilitation, as well as for longer-term monitoring for falls, sudden changes or gradual deterioration in performance.

Using our in-house multidisciplinary skill sets, we support our clients with an intelligent approach to the integration of technologies in rehabilitation and orthopaedic devices. We have extensive experience of developing products that require the use of low-power electronics, the selection and deployment of sensor technologies and the application of technologies for digital, iOS and Android applications. We are also experts in the design of user interfaces, including the use of virtual reality technologies.

For better and long-lasting recovery

Integrated design, development, prototyping and evaluation

Our designers and engineers work alongside highly skilled technicians using both computer-based tools, for development and evaluation, as well as our in-house prototyping and laboratory test facilities to achieve rapid understanding and insights to efficiently evolve a design solution.

Our in-house prototyping facilities are extensively equipped to support developments utilising a wide range of materials, including composite and fibre-based materials. In-house, we can produce parts by 3D printing, resin casting, manual machining, high-speed CNC machining, as well as traditional handcraft techniques.

In our test and evaluation laboratories, our designers and engineers evaluate rigs and prototypes to gain a thorough understanding of the evolving design. This first-hand understanding not only informs design decision-making, it also helps to inform the development of efficient manufacturing assembly, inspection and testing.
