Hybrid Reality Delivers Human Factors Insights

DCA has been exploring the use of hybrid prototypes that combine basic, low-fidelity physical mock-ups with virtual reality and pose estimation to deliver meaningful HF results as early as possible in the development programme.

In a recent example, we used this technology to assess a new train driver’s desk layout to see whether drivers could comfortably reach the controls that they needed to use most commonly during a series of typical driving operations. We were particularly looking to identify occurrences of repetitive stretching and over-reach, which can cause lower back strain and work related stress injuries.

A detailed description of this work was recently published in an article in the December 2022 issue of Rail Professional magazine.
