Celebrating Azuma’s green credentials after 5 years’ service

It is 5 years since the Azuma trains designed by DCA entered service with LNER on its East Coast route. Since the launch of this service on 15th May 2019, the Azuma trains have carried tens of millions of customers, setting new standards for comfort, reliability and customer experience.

Linda Wain, Engineering Director at LNER, commented on this occasion by saying: “The launch of Azuma five years ago was a monumental milestone for LNER and a monumental moment for rail travel and rail engineering. Our Azuma trains are one of the most sustainable ways to travel.“

Since its launch, LNER’s fleet of 65 Azuma trains has covered over 58 million miles, which is equivalent to travelling the circumference of Earth over 2,000 times. During this five-year period, LNER’s annual carbon emissions from its train services have reduced by 51 per cent, while the annual diesel consumption has fallen by more than 25 million litres, representing an 84 per cent reduction.
