Our philosophy
We add value by improving the success of product innovation.
We do this through an intelligent approach to design, based on the transparent management of risk, informed decision making, true integration of disciplines and rigorous development processes.
We believe that the outstanding commercial success of the products we help create is dependent ultimately on delivering exceptional value to our clients’ customers.
We provide the right blend of strategic thinking and pragmatism to deliver our clients’ projects successfully.
We balance the creativity and the technical discipline needed to achieve commercially successful product innovation.
Every client is unique. To support our clients, we like to understand them, their place in the market and their ambitions thoroughly.
Multidisciplinary design
From our inception in 1960, multidisciplinary design and development has been our foundational expertise.
There are no departments at DCA. Our studios, laboratories and workshops have different disciplines working side by side. Over sixty years we have developed an expertise in connecting and integrating the right disciplines, at the right time, in the right way to achieve success for our clients.
Our multidisciplinary design team members combine to create a vibrant fusion of expertise including designers, mechanical engineers, electronics hardware and software engineers, strategists, social scientists, ergonomists, project managers and prototyping technicians.
Our people
DCA is a collection of over 140 extraordinary individuals. Intelligent, creative and thorough, our people make the difference to our clients’ projects.
Each person is an expert in their own field but has the curiosity, understanding and flexibility to reach across traditional inter-disciplinary boundaries. Our organisational structures and team culture encourage this synergistic blending and integration of specialist skills. Our clients benefit not only from each individual’s depth of knowledge and experience but also from a team whose combined strength exceeds the sum of its individual members’ expertise.
Our creativity
Our creative work has resulted in over 5900 patent applications and more than 3600 granted patents worldwide for our clients since 2000.
Successful innovation starts by asking the right questions in the right ways, to develop the best problem statements. To solve these problems we bring together our creative, highly qualified and experienced staff to create bespoke multidiscipline teams. These teams are trained in a wide range of structured creativity processes and techniques that can be used to help them generate and deliver successful solutions.

Our leadership
DCA is an independently owned, full-service, product design and development consultancy operating globally from our campus of design studios, laboratories and workshops in Warwick, UK.
DCA’s growth and development over the last twenty years has been led by Managing Director, Rob Woolston, a leading consultant in medical product design.
Rob joined DCA in 1999 to lead our medical and scientific team, following significant experience in award-winning product design consultancy. He became Managing Director in 2002 and manages a board of two other Directors: Rob Bassil (below left) and Nick Mival (below right), each leading their individual market sectors and skill areas.
DCA’s Directors work together with an exceptional senior management team consisting of Strategic Managers, Sector Managers and Skill Leaders to refine our service offer continuously and assist our clients in delivering highly effective product design to their customers.
Company recognition
In addition to the many awards DCA has won for the quality, commercial effectiveness, and in more recent years, the sustainability of its design work, DCA has also been honoured with many company level awards and listings, such as being ranked as one of the UK’s top private companies in the Sunday Times ‘International Track 100’, winning the Plimsol ‘Outstanding Company Award’, multi-year ranking as the UK’s number one product design consultancy in the ‘Top 100 Consultancy Survey’ by Design Week, and twice winner of the ‘Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade’, one of the most coveted business awards and one of the highest accolades a business can achieve.
We are so proud to have twice been granted the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. Huge thanks to all of our staff and clients for making this possible.

Our Heritage
In 1960 David Carter CBE RDI founded David Carter Associates (DCA) as “a multidisciplinary consultancy involved in designing products for mass production.“
For over six decades since then we have consistently helped our clients from all regions and market sectors to deliver breakthrough products and experiences from the Stanley Knife to the Euro Shuttle train. David retired in 1992, but his multidisciplinary philosophy remains a cornerstone of our approach.
Sustainability
Under our environmental policy, we monitor our carbon outputs. We have reduced our carbon output by over 75% since we made this a measured focus in 2016. In addition, we now carbon-offset our travel, improving this figure to 86% and establishing a far lower base-level carbon output year-on-year for our operation.
QMS certification
DCA is certified to ISO 9001 (since 1992) and 13485 (since 2005).
The scope of our certification is:
Provision of design consultancy services and prototype manufacture for the commercial & industrial, consumer, medical and scientific and transport sectors.
We completed our transition to the latest versions of our certification standards in 2017 (ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016).
We are audited annually by LRQA and are re-certified every three years.
Charities and outreach
DCA support a number of local, national and international charities on a regularised basis, as well as reaching out into the local community by visiting schools to support career awareness activities and by sponsoring and taking part in local events.
